Abstract:
Glaucoma causes blindness due to the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). We have found that retinal microglia respond at early stages of disease, and play a critical role in degeneration of RGCs. We are investigating microglia activation as a candidate biomarker for the glaucoma, and investigating pathways involved in recruitment and activation of these cells in the retina.
